Cleaning air conditioning ducts

Apr272011

Many people want to know if it is important to clean air conditioning ducts for a healthy home environment.

The best article we found on this topic is at www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html where the US government advises on the topic.
Parts of that article are listed below.

You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if:

There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
There are specialists in mould removal who can actually test via a lab as to dangerous mould and spores.

Ducts are infested with vermin, e.g. (rodents or insects); or

Ducts are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.

Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems

However with many health issues it can be a process of eliminating possible causes, and most certainly if excess bacteria is present in the home cleaning your ducted air conditioning units will not do any harm.
Often we notice how drowsy or lethargic we feel in poorly ventilated offices. Having a home with similar stuffiness is probably not going to benefit your health.
